Seamus Ludlow (47): murdered 2 May 1976Revised: January 27, 2008.

The Argus (Dundalk), 23 January 2008:

Family seeking Ludlow inquiry

By Magaret Roddy

Relatives of Seamus Ludlow, the forestry worker murdered by Loyalist paramilitaries 32 years ago, say that they are pleased with the outcome of their meeting with An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern yesterdayt (Tuesday).

Kevin Ludlow and Mrs Nan Sharkey, brother and sister of the murdered man, along with his nephews Jimmy and Nicholas Sharkey, Benny Ludlow and Michael Donegan, solicitor James MacGuill, and Jane Winter of British Irish Rights Watch, met with An Taoiseach in Government buildings.

Jimmy Sharkey at the memorial in the lane where his late Uncle Seamus Ludlow was murdered on 2 May 1976. Jimmy has put the case for a public inquiry to An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern.'It was a very cordial meeting and we are happy with the outcome,' said Jimmy.

'We put our case to the Taoiseach, who listened to us.'

The family made the case for a focused independent inquiry to be carried out into how the murder was investigated and the subsequent cover-up which they believe took place.

'There was some discussion about collusion but we are more concerned about the cover-up of a murder which took place in this State,' explained Jimmy.

'We feel that a focused independent inquiry to be held over a set period of time would give us some of the answers we've been asking for.'

The family don't see any point in re-opening the investigation into Mr Ludlow's abduction and murder as vital files and forensic evidence, including bullets and clothing, have gone missing.

'Our solicitor Mr MacGuill has drawn up a list of proposals for an inquiry and the matter is being referred to the Attorney General.'

As they continue their fight to establish the truth surrounding Mr Ludlow's murder and the failure to prosecute anyone for his killing, the family hope to meet with the Attorney General in the coming weeks.

'Deputy Seamus Kirk, who was with the Taoiseach, spoke to us after the meeting and we asked him to use his influence to have the matter advanced,' said Jimmy.

The Ludlow family supports the campaign by the Rooney and Watters families of Dundalk for an inquiry into the murderous Dundalk Bombing of 19 December 1975 which resulted in the sectarian murder of Jack Rooney and Hugh Watters.

A  Barron Report on this other sectarian attack in Dundalk, and other attacks along the border, was published 5 July 2006.

An Oireachtas sub-committee also held public hearings on the Dundalk bombing and issued a further report on 29 November 2006.

The Oireachtas report found damning evidence of British state collusion between UK army and intelligence agencies and loyalist terrorists in this and other atrocities along the border.

It is hardly surprising that to this date the British government has made no comment whatsoever about these serioius charges!
